How to Determine House Placement from Planetary Degrees

For natal charts, if I am given only the planetary placement in degrees within the sign, how would I calculate which house they're in (i.e., how to calculate degrees for each house)?

Decoding Natal Charts: How to Determine House Placement from Planetary Degrees

  1. Understand the Zodiac Signs:Each zodiac sign covers 30 degrees of the 360-degree circle. A sign begins at 0 degrees and ends at 29 degrees.
  2. Identify the Sign:Determine the sign where the planet is placed based on its degrees. For example, if a planet is at 15 degrees in Aries, it's in the sign of Aries.
  3. Know the House Cusp:Each house begins at a specific degree of a sign, known as the house cusp. Houses are numbered 1 to 12, starting from the Ascendant (Lagna).
  4. Calculate the House Placement:
    • To find which house a planet is in, consider the degrees of the planet and compare it with the starting degree of the house it falls in.
    • If the planet is at a higher degree than the house cusp, it's in that house. If it's at a lower degree, it's in the previous house.

5. Example:

  • If a planet is at 15 degrees in Aries, and the 2nd house cusp begins at 10 degrees in Taurus, the planet is in the 2nd house.

6. Continue for Each Planet:

  • Repeat these steps for each planet in the chart.

Understanding Zodiac Signs:

1.Zodiac Signs (Rashi):There are 12 zodiac signs, and they make up the Zodiac or Rashi chakra.Aries (Mesh), Taurus (Vrish), Gemini (Mithun), Cancer (Karka), Leo (Simha), Virgo (Kanya), Libra (Tula), Scorpio (Vrishchik), Sagittarius (Dhanu), Capricorn (Makar), Aquarius (Kumbh), Pisces (Meen).

2. Degrees in a Sign:

  • The entire Zodiac circle has 360 degrees.
  • Each sign covers 30 degrees (360° / 12 = 30° for each sign).

3.Conversion of Degrees to Minutes and Seconds:

  • 1 degree (1°) = 60 minutes (60′).
  • 1 minute (1′) = 60 seconds (60”).

4.Practical Example:

  • If you look at the chart, remember that each sign takes up a portion in the circle.
  • Imagine slicing the circle into 12 equal parts, and each part is one zodiac sign (30 degrees).

Now, understand Nakshatras:

  1. Nakshatras in Zodiac (Rashi Chakra):Besides the zodiac signs, there are 27 Nakshatras in the Zodiac.
  2. Arc of 1 Nakshatra:To find the arc of 1 Nakshatra, we divide the entire Zodiac (360 degrees) by 27 Nakshatras.360° ÷ 27 = 13°20' (or 13 degrees and a reminder of 20 minutes).
  3. Division into 4 Pads or Charans:Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 parts called Pads or Charans.13°20' ÷ 4 = 3°20' (3 degrees and 20 minutes).
  4. Further Division of 1 Pad:If we want to break down 1 Pad further:3°20' ÷ 4 = 0°50' (0 degrees and 50 minutes).
  • Alternatively, you can convert the 1degree reminder:
  • 1° = 60 minutes + 20 minutes = 80 minutes.
  • 80 minutes ÷ 4 = 20 minutes.

Remember, the Ascendant (Lagna) is the starting point, and each house covers 30 degrees. This method helps determine the house placement of each planet based on its degrees within a sign. For accurate and detailed interpretations, it's recommended to use an astrology software or consult with a professional astrologer.
